KidAbilities therapists use a variety of treatment techniques to help a child achieve his/her goals. The following is a list of modalities and techniques we use. Since therapists are always attending continuing education workshops and working to add the very latest techniques to their repertoire the following list is not meant to be exhaustive or unchanging.
Gross Motor: A large variety of equipment is used to challenge a child's gross motor skill, balance, strength and endurance.
Fine Motor: An extensive array of manipulatives, games, specialized writing instruments and paper, tools and toys make our fine motor area unique in the variety of activities and creative use of equipment.
Sensory Integration: KidAbilities has staff specially trained and certified in this evaluation and treatment technique. The Director, Sue Seiler was trained in this technique by a therapist who studied with Dr. A. Jean Ayres. Our sensory gyms are large, colorful and inviting, stocked with an abundance of equipment which can challenge any type of sensory issue.
Neuro-developmental Therapy: KidAbilities has staff specially trained and certified in this treatment technique. This therapeutic intervention is especially useful for children with motor difficulties.
Therapeutic Listening: Most of KidAbilities staff is trained the use of "Therapeutic Listening," which provides children an auditory approach to improving sensory processing problems. Listening programs are usually implemented as part of a whole approach to therapy.
Interactive Metronome ®: Interactive Metronome ® is a therapeutic modality aimed at improving motor planning, sequencing, timing and other behavioral / neurological processes that are essential for good attention and learning. Interactive metronome is a computer based, interactive technological version of a traditional metronome used in music. The method uses tapping motions to develop control over one's body and mind. It can be helpful to individuals who have specific challenges with motor planning, timing, rhythm, concentrating or over activity. Studies have shown that IM is especially helpful for those who have difficulty focusing, attending and concentrating in school. It can also assist those individuals who simply want to improve at golf, baseball or other sports. KidAbilities has a number of staff certified in this method of treatment.
Wilbarger Therapeutic "Brushing" Protocol: A program of deep pressure massage especially useful for children who are overly sensitive to sensory input. This technique may be beneficial as part of a "sensory diet" program. All KidAbilities therapists' are familiar with this treatment technique.
Handwriting Intervention: Some children have not learned how to write, others have difficulty with spacing, letter formation, pencil grip, visual motor problems or even fatigue due to weak trunk and hand muscles. Our specialists identify the problem and either remediate the underlying difficulties or help with compensatory strategies.
Activities of Daily Living: Many children have great difficulty with the routines of daily life. These problems may include dressing, eating, bathroom use and sleeping. Our therapists are trained to assist parents with these problems so children do not disrupt the flow of daily life for the entire family.
Computer Skills; "Cyberkids": This program uses different high and low tech solutions when a child is frustrated because he/she has not mastered computer use but is not a functional writer. This program can be integrated into your child's current occupational therapy program or if your child is not currently receiving therapy, your child can receive this specialized intervention.
